Sceptre of light, embodiment of verticality, penetrating power of consciousness to pierce all illusions, I bow before thee in reverence!
The lingam (the masculine virile organ) is honoured and worshipped in Tantra as the most holy part of a man’s body. By honouring his own lingam and following practices to awaken its hidden power, a man can awaken his consciousness and take rapid steps in his spiritual evolution. Similarly, by adoring the awakened lingam of her beloved, a woman can be penetrated by the light of consciousness, illuminating her being and awakening her fascinating feminine power.
The erect lingam in all its glory is an embodiment of virility, masculine power and above all, consciousness. Sadly, the sanctity of the lingam is not recognised in today’s society, which even promotes an unhealthy relationship between men and their lingam. When boys first start to experience erection, it is a sign of their coming manhood and the presence of masculine sublime consciousness in their being. From the Tantric point of view, this early sign of awakening should be celebrated and honoured. However, boys are instead taught to treat their erection as a source of embarrassment, which should be hidden and suppressed. This imprints in their being the twisted idea that the erect lingam has a connotation of something ‘dirty’ or at the very least awkward, when it appears in the ‘wrong’ moment. Not surprisingly tensions and inhibitions can easily appear around this subject, which are blockages in the way of the man truly awakening his virility and the real power of the lingam.
This problem is further amplified by the sexualisation of today’s society and the proliferation of the porn industry. By aiming to emulate the mostly degrading, mechanical and rushed sex, which is devoured by numerous people on their screens, the genital organs of both the man and women are essentially used in order to produce a superficial pleasure and mediocre rush of excitement. Thus the ‘holy grails’ of our bodies are demeaned as unclean objects. Due to the misunderstandings that prevail today about the needs of women when it comes to erotic intimacy, and the lack of education about how to make love, the lingam is even viewed by some women as a vehicle of the uncomfortable and even painful sex they have sometimes experienced.
It is thus imperative for both men and women to reevaluate their relationship with the lingam – and here the Tantric perspective can be of great help. From the Tantric point of view, the erect lingam is the embodiment of Shiva, the Supreme Masculine Consciousness. This means that through the lingam, we can experience the highest and most holy aspect of masculinity that exists. The lingam literally provides the ascending path to godliness, which is, not by chance, illustrated by the vertical and uplifting direction of the masculine erection. By realising the true nature of the erect lingam and honouring its presence in their own being, men can deepen their relationship with Shiva and can more easily awaken their masculine force and the penetrating power of their consciousness.
Every man carries this sceptre of light that is an essential part of their body and being, but what does it mean to awaken the power of the lingam? The power of the lingam is not automatic and most men need to awaken it gradually through Tantric practice. For example, the more a man practices amorous erotic continence and makes love without losing a drop of energy, experiencing tantric orgasm without ejaculation, the more he gains the hidden or occult power of his lingam. The more a man lets go of his shame and inhibitions and is able to make love in a state of inner freedom and relaxation, while being always aware, conscious, with his energies oriented in a vertical direction, the more potent his virility becomes. There are also techniques and methods that specifically help to awaken this occult power, which are offered by the Tantric and Taoist systems.
How can this occult power be recognised? One of the clearest signs is in the erection itself. When the power of the lingam is awakened, the erection is firm and powerful, being maintained for hours without effort. Moreover, such a virile man is able to enter in erection in almost any situation, being relaxed and conscious, and having overcome fears, performance anxiety and sexual inhibitions. An awakened Tantric woman can easily recognise this occult power, when it is awakened in her lover’s lingam. Such a lingam emanates a powerful energy field, which can produce extraordinary sensations in a the being of a woman who has awakened her sensitivity and feminine sensuality. Placing the palm of the hand on the erect lingam in a state of awareness is enough to experience its powerful effects. Of course when making love with a man who has awakened the occult power of the lingam, the overwhelming states of Tantric orgasm that the woman can experience are very much amplified.
In a loving couple that is full of spiritual aspiration, awakening the occult power of the lingam and the occult power of the yoni are fundamental steps to realise the deep and powerful fusion that is characteristic of the Tantric experience. Such a couple can easily awaken the higher aspects of their own masculinity and femininity respectively, and can raise their level of consciousness to reach their most elevated and ecstatic spiritual goals.
